All black tux
The classic black tuxedo comes in a dark black textured weave and a black lapel in black satin fabric. Trousers are black with a black galon stripe. Typically, a matching black satin bowtie and a white formal dress shirt are also worn with a black set of shoes and socks.

What tie with tuxedo?
We include a pre-tied black satin bow tie with all custom tuxedo shirt purchases. We prefer self tie bowties but this is backup option we include for our customers.
Black tie tuxedo
A black tie tuxedo is simply any garment that adheres to the black tie rules. Often a peak or shawl collar with satin lapels and in a dark fabric like black, midnight navy or off-white ivory in the summer or at a resort.
Tuxedo shirt
We make our tuxedo shirts in a textured white weave wrinkle-resistant cotton with a default fly front placket so you don’t need a stud set, a standard spread collar, and a French cuff.
Black velvet tuxedo
Keep it smooth and textured at the same time. Use velvet for cooler evenings in the fall and winter that looks less shiny and more matte.

Black and blue tuxedo
Lords of Wool offers black 3-piece suits. We recommend a single-breasted peak lapel with one button for a sleek look that’s also more formal than a notch lapel suit. Adding a vest to make a 3-piece black wedding suit gives some extra panache.

Types of satin lapels on tuxedos
Peak lapel tuxedo
The peak lapel is the default classic of a tuxedo. Originally derived from a white tie tailcoat, the peak lapel came over to black tie in the same timeless tradition. This can be done with a single or double-breasted jacket.
Shawl lapel tuxedo
The shawl collar has a rounded front and the other alternative to a peak lapel for black tie. The shawl collar comes from old smoking jackets, which men would wear over their tuxedo jackets to avoid getting their tuxedo smokey and ashes from burning them.
Bibbed lapel tuxedo
The bibbed lapel is similar to a shawl collar, however, instead of being a continuous arch, it turns sharply inward at the base. This looks really elegant as both a single or double breasted style and has a more “vintage” look to it.
Notch lapel
While we do not necessarily recommend a notch lapel for a tuxedo (this is best saved for suits or sport jackets as it’s more casual), it can be done on a tuxedo. The notch lapel was somewhat popular on tuxedos in the 1990s in a misguided attempt to casualize black tie ensembles alongside black satin neckties.
Details of a tuxedo
1-button
All our single-breasted tuxedos are single button fronts as this is not only keeping in black tie tradition, but also the most formal form of buttoning.
Wool vs mohair
Mohair fabric is crisp, drapes well, breathes and also has some sheen. Due to its cost, mohair has been replaced now with wool, which has become more finer.
Tuxedo trouser
A tuxedo trouser has a galon stripe of satin down the outseam, no belt loops (side adjusters only) and a double hook closure on the front so there are no buttons. Suspender buttons on the inside and we often suggest no rear pockets. Add a 5cm satin waistband no cummerbund is needed.
Tuxedo shoes
The traditional shoe for black tie comes from white tie: the opera pump, in black leather loafer style with a silk bow. The other common choice is a black patent leather oxford lace-up in a wholecut or captoe. Add silk laces for a refined touch and always wear silk socks.
Big and tall tuxedo
Because all of our garments are custom made, we can fit larger guys without a problem. No one should have to resort to an ill-fitting rental!
Slim fit tuxedo
If you prefer a lean and slimmed fit, then we can do it to your specifications. Just let our stylists know how much slimmer you want the jacket and pant to fit when you wear the try-on garments.
Summer tuxedo
Want to keep cool and still wear black? Try a black seersucker tuxedo with an unlined body so you have maximum breathability and air-flow.
